Beyond the Patient Room: The Business Acumen Every New NP Needs
NP school taught you to diagnose and treat, not how your job pays for itself. How visits, unsigned notes, and the schedule shape every day you work.
NP school prepared you clinically and gave you almost nothing on the business side, in the classroom or in clinicals. As an RN, you rarely had to think about revenue, and many of us were proud of that. Staying outside the money is part of why nursing is trusted the way it is.
As an NP, that changes. You have an NPI number, you bill, and the care you provide is how the practice gets paid. Generating revenue is part of the job whether or not anyone says so out loud.
You do not need to become a businessperson. You need to understand enough of the business to recognize what productivity pressure is actually about, and to see when a job asks more of your evenings than any schedule could hold.
