The NP Negotiation Playbook: What to Ask For (Besides Salary)
Salary is the easiest part of an NP offer to compare and the least likely to tell you whether the job will work. The 3 terms to negotiate first.
Most new NPs walk into their first offer conversation thinking about one number. That makes sense. You spent years and a lot of money becoming an NP, and the salary is the one part of the offer you can compare to something.
It is also the part least likely to tell you whether the job will work. A strong salary in a job with no administrative time, no ramp, and nobody to take your questions to is still a job that follows you home every night.
Three things decide that, and you can negotiate all 3 before you sign: protected administrative time, a real onboarding plan, and the parts of compensation that never appear on the salary line. Here is what each one is, why it matters, and where new NPs most often get caught.
