The Compensation Myth: Look Beyond the Starting Salary of Your First NP Job
Your first NP offer may look barely higher than your RN pay. Why that comparison misleads you, and the hourly math that shows what an offer really pays.
One of the hardest moments in a new NP's job search comes with the first offer letter. You spent years and a lot of money becoming a nurse practitioner, and the salary is not much higher than what you earned as an experienced RN. Sometimes it is lower.
The question that follows is a fair one: was this worth it?
The salary on that letter cannot answer it. The comparison you are making is lopsided from the start, and the number itself tells you less than it seems to. What an offer pays depends on how many hours the job takes, what it leaves you to cover, and how it grows.
